Safety Tips
Your safety is our priority. Follow these guidelines when using HouseMatch.ng to find housing or roommates.
Before You Meet
Check Verification Status
Look for verified badges on profiles. Verified users have confirmed their phone number, ID, or employment status.
Use In-App Messaging
Keep all communications on HouseMatch.ng until you're comfortable. Avoid sharing personal phone numbers or social media early on.
Research the Area
Look up the neighborhood online. Check for reviews, safety reports, and nearby amenities before viewing.
Trust Your Instincts
If something feels off about a listing or person, it probably is. Don't proceed if you're uncomfortable.
During Property Viewings
- Tell someone where you're going. Share the address and time of your viewing with a friend or family member.
- Meet during daylight hours. Schedule viewings during the day when there's more activity around.
- Bring a friend. If possible, take someone along for the first viewing.
- Meet in a public place first. Consider meeting the lister at a nearby cafe before going to the property.
- Keep your phone charged. Ensure you can make calls if needed.
- Drive yourself or use public transport. Don't rely on the other person for transportation.
Red Flags to Watch For
Price seems too good to be true
Pressure to pay before viewing
Refusal to meet in person
Requests for unusual payment methods
Vague or copied listing descriptions
Claims to be abroad or unavailable
Payment Safety
- Never pay before viewing. Always see the property in person before making any payment.
- Use secure payment methods. When using Pay Small Small, all payments are tracked and protected.
- Get receipts for everything. Ensure you have documentation for all payments made.
- Verify the recipient. Make sure you're paying the actual landlord or authorized agent.
- Be wary of cash-only demands. Legitimate listers accept bank transfers or other traceable methods.
Roommate Safety
- Have a video call first. Before meeting, have a video chat to verify they are who they claim to be.
- Ask for references. Request contact information for previous roommates or landlords.
- Discuss expectations early. Talk about lifestyle, guests, cleaning, and other house rules before committing.
- Put agreements in writing. Document rent splits, bills, and house rules in a written agreement.
